iMessage: “number will expire in 5 days” notification

“[phone number] will expire in 5 days. Reinsert SIM to keep using this number with iMessage and FaceTime”

not helpful because I use an eSIM

When I open the notification, it takes me to settings for iMessage, where it says

“ [phone number] 4 days left

This number is registered to your Apple ID, but is not associated with this phone. You can keep using the number for iMessage and FaceTime until it expires.”

I’ve tried turning off both iMessage and FaceTime, followed by turning off the phone for 30 seconds and then restarting it. When I turn on iMessage and FaceTime, the message remains.

Hopefully someone has a solution. Not sure what will happen in 4 days. I just switched to a new phone company (Public Mobile, subsidiary of Telus) on a prepaid basis. Maybe this is related?

iPhone SE, iOS 17
