Connectivity to MacBook Pro (15inch - mid 2012) - USB C to USB A iPad Pro (12.9 inch 5th gen)

Can someone please clarify is it is possible to backup newer iPads to older model MacBooks?

It seems that when I plug mine in, it will charge but not be recognized by the computer. What might I have to do for it to recognize it? I've been airdropping everything to my MacBook Pro which is a painful process and want to back it up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What versions of macOS, and iPadOS, are your devices running, respectively?

Your tag line suggests that you are running macOS 10.15 (Catalina), in which case your version of macOS should be new enough to recognize your iPad. You'd use the Music and TV apps to manage your media library, and the Finder to handle manual synchronization with your iPad, and other management of your iPad.

That's the correct macOS I'm running which is why I'm more confused that it won't recognize it. Nothing shows up in Finder for this device or Music/TV while every other device works perfectly normal. Strangely enough, the newer iPad will charge from my MacBook. I know that the USB cord is delivering power but data, I've tried several but have the same results.

There are cables that have the power pins connected, but not the data pins.

Are you using a cable and/or adapter that are advertised to carry data?

One cord is from my PS5 which is a Space Shuttle-C AWM E101344 USB Data Cable Style 2725 30V which I know transfers firmware updates to my controller only on my PS5. It doesn't seem to be recognized on my MacBook either... The other USB cord is a wildcard as my husband gave it to me.

I think you might have just solved my problem though! I'll get a new cord Anker that transfers data up to 5Gbps and see if that will work (fingers crossed).
