Sonoma unexpectedly going to sleep

I have been setting up my new mac and when adjusting the sleep time, I have started to get unexpected black screens for no reason.

Despite setting the inactivity time to 10 minutes, the computer goes to sleep after a few seconds, even in the middle of writing something or using the trackpad. Waking up, going to sleep 3 seconds after. Waking up, going to sleep 8 seconds after. I see the wake-up animations, as if I was logged out.

Even worse enabling the auto session lock, this would get me locked out every 3 seconds.

I might be facing the classical intermittent problem, or maybe some of my workarounds did the trick for now.

  • Setting an inactivity time to 20 minutes or above
  • Reenabling the background services, wake on LAN activity, etc. that I had disabled

Having a computer that eventually sleeps every 3 seconds is absolutely unusable

Thank you 😎 for the opportunity to assist further

To avoid the question / answer and question answer scenario

Suggest the User start with the Top Suggestion and test.

Thereafter move down to the next and test again. Keeping going in the Order that they have been presented or until you reach the Final Suggestion

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading. It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

Use hot corners on Mac

You can use the corners of the screen as hot corners, to quickly start actions when you move the pointer to a corner. For example, you can start the screen saver when you move the pointer to the top-left corner of the screen, or lock the screen when you move the pointer to the top-right corner.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Desktop & Dock  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click Hot Corners on the right.
  3. For each corner you want to use, click the pop-up menu, then choose an option, such as Notification Center, Launchpad, or Lock Screen.
  4. To use a modifier key with the hot corner, press and hold the Command, Shift, Option, or Control key, or a combination of these keys, while viewing the pop-up menus.
  5. Click Done.

The User ( you ) does have an opportunity to express their displease with the possible Solution presented.

Offering a suggestion, sometimes, may not provide Instantaneous solutions that meet their Expectations.

There are times, where some additional work needed on the part of the Author, too

So far and as of this writing

What else has the User ( you ) done to try and fix this issue.

Perhaps if you were to elaborate further, we would cease to Offer that which the User has already attempted

Above is not intended as a flippant remark but to ask the user to help us help you with this issue

@PRP_53 Please, read my original message.

You are telling how to get the opposite situation that I'm describing. You are telling me how to log out using a hot corner or a keyboard shortcut. There are even more ways but this is not the point.

The problem is that my screen goes into sleep/lock when I don't tell it to. Just when I'm using the computer. Even right after waking it up.

I did explain the settings I changed (sleep time, auto lock) and 2 of the workarounds that seem to be avoiding the problem somehow.

Predicated on your user byline " iMac 24″

Using a M2 Mac Mini ( headless computer ) with Sonoma 14.2 with External Display via Direct HDMI from computer to 27 " Display

The setting in below does not perform as you have described in your Original Posting

Perhaps you need to adjust the " Turn Off Display when Inactive "

Thereafter, perhaps my esteemed colleague has additional suggestions which are very welcome to do so.

> Perhaps you need to adjust the " Turn Off Display when Inactive "

That's what the first message explains that I did. It would be set to 5, 10, 20 minutes and it would go to sleep in the middle of doing something

The 2 "workarounds" I already tried make no difference now. I reverted back to the settings (sleep after 10 minutes, Energy Saver > Allow background services while in sleep) and I'm not getting the problem back.

So I hit a beautiful intermittent problem.

Will try to make a video the next time it happens
