Setting Apple Pages TOC left margin

Generating a table of contents (TOC) seems to fix the left hand margin of the TOC. In the screenshot below you can see Pages places the TOC's left hand side at ~3.5 ruler 'units'. It includes 3 symbols on the ruler at the left:

  • A margin downward pointing triangle
  • An indent 'pin', and
  • A small rounded square that is seemingly inseparable from the indent symbol.

What is this rounded square symbol?

I want to shift the whole TOC left to align with the pilcrow that sits above (at 2 ruler units). However the TOC margin triangle refuses to be dragged to the left (see screen shot below). However all the ruler symbols can only be dragged right.

Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?

OK - I have figured something out here.

When inserting a TOC, it inherits the margin width / indent at the time of insertion. After that it seems resistant to change. So i made sure to insert the TOC in front of the pilcrow I wanted it to align to - and it does indeed align.

Still don't know what the little rounded square symbol is in the rule tho...
