How do I verify Apple notification that Apple ID may be locked due to suspicious activity unless I call 1-800 number and provide passcode

I received email from Apple Support saying my Apple ID has been locked due to suspicious activity. It gives me a 1-800 number to call with a passcode. Is it ok to call the 1-800 number?

The message was NOT from Apple. It's a SCAM that is trying to trick you into providing personal information.. Do NOT call the number or click on any links in the message.

Delete the message and any others like it that you might receive.

How do we know it is a scam? Apple will never send a message like this.

It is a phishing attempt. Do not respond. Do not divulge any personal or financial information. You can use the address below to forward the suspect email message, as an attachment to Apple.
