How to access iCloud iMessage storage?

If I can only restore my iPhone from an iPhone backup, but I have years of information stored in iCloud… how do I ever gain access to that? Where does it live? Sounds like it’s stored there but without any purpose if I can’t restore from iCloud.

If you use messages in iCloud your messages are not part of your device backup. Instead, your messages will sync again when you log Ito your Apple ID. Verify that messages in iCloud is turned on.

Yes, your messages in iCloud will sync with your device. For example, if you get a new device and turn on messages in iCloud, the messages sync to the new device. If you reset an old device, your messages will sync. Most of your media attached to the messages resides in iCloud and is downloaded again when accessed within messages.
