gen 1 pencil will not charge

Brand new ipad 9th generation and 1st generation pencil. Charging pencil with power adapter & cable will charge to about 20% and will not go higher left on charge overnight. When the pencil is plugged into the ipad, whatever charge it has is drained within a few seconds to zero, and it stays at zero charge as long as pencil is plugged into ipad. I returned pencil (to Best Buy) and got a replacement, sealed in the box, and it behaved EXACTLY the same way. I set up an appointment with Geek Squad, they told me there were batches of bad pencils circulating, problems with suppliers, and gave me a third pencil which has worked properly for the day I've had it. Just be aware that your new Apple 1st generation pencil may not work, and the replacement may also not work. You might be making a lot of trips to the store.
