Portrait photos in imovie

I make a yearly movie in iMovie comprised of all our photos from the year. I’ve never had an issue but now anything taken in portrait mode just look all blurry. Seems like most of the photos (portrait or not) are blurry after the first portrait mode photo was added. Can this be fixed without adjusting each photo?

What iMovie version and operating system version are you using on your Mac? What is the format of the portrait photos? HEIF? HDR?

Meanwhile, try deleting/resetting preferences and see if that cures it. To delete/reset preferences open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

Also, create a new project and add your portrait photos into it and see if they display properly there.

As a workaround, create a slide show project with your photos using the slide show project feature of the Photos app. Then File/Export the slide show from the Photos. app to your desktop as a movie file. Drag the movie file into iMovie, where you can add music, speed up or slow down the video, or cut and paste split segments.
