Lost AirPods (Gen.2)

I have lost my gen two air pods. I know for a fact they weren’t left at theyre last known location. But I cannot find them in the place I knew I had them last. I fear they were stolen. If someone took them and used them how would I know they have been stolen or if they’re just misplaced?

Airpods have a limited finding feature, unlike other Apple devices which may have GPS, etc. This applies particularly if the Airpods are outside the Bluetooth range (150 feet if you are very, very lucky). Beyond that range you don't know what their status is.

To learn how to find your lost AirPods, read this support article --> Find your lost AirPods with Find My - Apple Support

Using the features offered by Find My is the only way Apple offers for tracking or locating a lost or missing device. There is no other Apple service that can find, track, or otherwise flag your device for you. If they do not work then you will have to resort to conventional methods for locating lost items. For Find My, ALL the requirements in this list must be fulfilled for Find My to even have a chance to work:

- Find My [device] must have been set up before they went missing.

- They must be in range (<~150') or all you will see is "last location".

- They must be charged (see the above article for details).

- They are not inside their Charging Case (Airpods Max Smart Case is not the same thing.) or you will only see their last know location when outside the case.*

- They have not been reset by somebody who found them.

- To find a single Airpod, put the one you have in the charging case first.

- You cannot track a lost case with Find My. With AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or later you can play a sound to help you locate them; you can also pick the case.

If Find My is not tracking them then you will have to resort to conventional means for finding lost objects.
