You can't remove the stand.

The iMacs that are not expressly ordered as VESA mount option, but rather, have a stand, are not tapped for VESA mounting hardware and have a smooth back. That in addition to a non-removable stand.

although the stand cannot be removed, there ARE adapters to attach a VESA mount to the existing iMac stand.

For some of the earliest 27" iMacs – the ones with thick bodies, that had built-in optical drives – you could order a VESA mount kit after purchase. I don't think Apple still carries these VESA mount kits, but I remember them being available.

If your 27" iMac is one of those that has a thin chassis and lacks a built-in optical drive, then either it came with a VESA mount from the factory (special-order variant) or it didn't. There was no after-purchase conversion option.
