Apple seriel numbers

I’m looking to see if there is any official clarification around what the seriel numbers on iPhones relate to, I’ve recently received a replacement new handset from apple as part of an insurance claim and my device serial number starts with an F, apple are telling me that the serial numbers are random and don’t have any specific designation.

does apple state this anywhere officially that the letters at the start actually mean something.

thanks for any help

If you are hoping to verify the New or Refurbished status, you need to check the model number, not the serial number.

For the model number:

M = New

N = Replacement

F = Refurbished

P = Personalized
