Battery drain

Macbook Pro M1 Max, Monterey OS

I have found older discussions about this, but I wanted to learn if maybe there is anything new.

I'm discovering some dramatic battery draining going on. I left it at 50%, closed the lid and discovered it was at 30% the following morning. I read through the comments and learned I could use Activity Monitor/Usage and find what apps were using power during sleep. I found only one, Davinci Resolve video editor. It clearly stated in the list that it did not allow sleep mode. So I shut that down for the next day/night. The following morning, I found it down to 14%. Then I shut down Firefox (even though it said in Usage that it wasn't preventing sleep mode) and the third morning the laptop had expended everything.

So Davinci Resolve was partly a culprit, and maybe Firefox is too. But with everything closed, something was still eating energy. Should I just assume that is the way it works now?

One possible reason for your MacBook battery draining while it sleeps is processes running in the background you know nothing about. These are often initiated by login items. Login items are applications that get automatically opened when you log in. They can consume a lot of CPU resources and Mac energy.

It’s easy to turn login items off:

  1. Open System Settings > General.
  2. Switch to the Login Items tab.
  3. Select the login items you want to remove and click the “-” sign below.

System Settings>Battery, disable Enable Powernap & wake for NetworkAccess. Enable put Disks to sleep when possible.
