What is the simplest way to retain metadata when downloading pics from my iphone to my Microsoft computer?

I can not figure out how to smoothly download the pics from my phone onto my PC. When I plug my phone directly into my computer the files won't show up on my PC even when I click trust. When I start a download it doesn't finish...... if I can get my computer to somehow allow me to open the files from my phone. When I upload to icloud and then try and download from there all the metadata is gone. When I tried to download the icloud app for Microsoft computers I didn't see any way to download from the cloud to my pc and retain metadata. Could someone please help me figure out the easiest way to just get the photos from my iphone to a folder on my PC with metadata intact.

iPhone 7, iOS 15

I recently tested this on the Mac via Windows 10 VM File Explorer > Apple iPhone > Internal Storage > DCIM > YYYYMM_ and could get original unedited iPhone pixels and metadata to transfer OK.

I don't know if there is Mac AirDrop equivalent for Windows that would allow also date, caption, location edits to copy to the computer (also the edited IMG_E####.* do not copy edited metadata via Image Capture or File Explorer).
