When purchased it was a 64gb XR I decided that since I’ll no longer be using a SIM card (updated to newer phone) I’d put in a 256gb sd card however the iPhone still limits me to 64gb of space. How can I make the iPhone recognize that there’s more space?

iPhones don’t have an SD card slot at all. Where did you put an SD card?
There is not now or has never been a SD card slot in any iPhone.
By putting an SD card into the SIM card slot, all you are going to achieve is breaking your iPhone.
There is no increased storage by forcing an SD card into the SIM card slot.
You seem to be having a difficult time understanding that you can put the SD card in the phone, but it will do nothing to increase the storage capacity on your phone. The storage will remain at 64 GB maximum SD....card or not.
The bottom line.......the SIM card slot is for one thing only.....a SIM card.
The 64 GB storage of your XR is fixed. It cannot be increased. It is not possible to add more storage to the iPhone.
You can not add storage space to an iPhone.
You cannot put a micro SD card in where the SIM card belongs. It doesn't work that way.

Doing so will accomplish nothing, other than possibly destroying any connection points within the SIM cards slot.

If you have the same issue - that you tried to put an SD card in the SIM slot, then the answer is the same. All you will do is break the phone. Is that what you did?

We have already told you multiple times that it is not possible to increase the storage capacity on an iPhone.
Asking the same question over and over will not result in a different answer.

Same issue but when I exchange sim cards between two phones the 256 vs. 64 storage switches as well. Is there a setting to adjust those?
