Any way to get photos to follow a green screen page turn?

Give this a try:

It's an effect (I never released). You can set the timing of the animation. You can set the size of the effect with Crop Width % and Crop Height % and add roundness to the "pages".

It uses a drop zone for the "page" your turning away from... if that makes sense.

It doesn't do very much else and there may be a brief (1 frame), annoying, "artifact" in the seam just before the page finishes turning... but you should be able to cover it with something if absolutely necessary. If it doesn't bother you — all the more power to you! If you need a way to suppress this, let me know — I think I know a workaround. If your clip and drop zone sources are similarly colored... you probably won't notice anything.

Other issues: you might have issues fitting the drop zone if the two sources are different aspects... If you run into this issue, let me know — there's a workaround.

Other than that, it should do in a pinch!

Turn the Page

Lead in image/video is the drop zone. Pan and Scale to suit. Fill Opaque with the Fill Color can help with that "artifact" I referred to (maybe ... :))

The Shape parameters will Crop the layout to suit your needs. Roundness if you want rounded corners.

The animation section:

Start Time is the delay until the page turns. It is in % of length of clip (10 second clip will start one second in if set to 10).

End Time is the point at which the page finishes turning, also in % of length of clip.

Curvature is for "easing". 0 is linear, 100% is Ease In/Ease Out. It's only really noticeable with longer animations.

This effect is not in the best prepared presentation because it was still under development when I shelved it about 11 months ago. I was going to get back to it but I've been "distracted" by other projects along the way. It does, however, work well enough for simple, one-way, animations.

If you have Motion, you're welcome to play with it. Be careful not to alter the original if you need to start over!

That is the nature of drop zones... the content is Spatially Conformed to the size of the drop zone from the template. [That's WHY the Pan/Scale parameters are included.] Furthermore, the drop zone will crop the edges of the added content when scaling - depending on the aspect ratio of the clip you add the Turn the Page effect to (example: cinemascope/letterboxed).

Generally the front and back sides of the page turn can be matched with the Crop Width/Height parameters.

If the effect is smaller than the view area, I also recommend using Crop Height so that the page turn doesn't get chopped off at the original clip boundaries so you can actually see all of the dimensional page:

Perhaps now you can see why development of this project was shelved... ;) There is a lot more work that needs to go into this to make it more user friendly - even something this simple in concept. It works... but what a pain.

I think it can be created using just FCP, but it is very difficult to apply a photo to a two-dimensional animation to make it look three-dimensional. Careful work is required to make it look natural while exploiting the illusions of the human eye.
