Full access to photo library

Hi y’all!

When third-party apps ask for full access to photo library, the iPhone pop up says that you’re giving access to all your photos and videos and that “Photos may contain data associated with location, depth information, captions and audio.”

I’ve always thought that, even if the app can access my photo library, it will only load on its servers the media that I choose to load – so that the view of all my media through the third-party app is just a local view. Basically, I give permission to the app to access my whole library but all remains local.

The iPhone pop up made me wondering if I’m instead giving the app permission to potentially access any media of my library remotely without a specific second permission.

I’m pretty sure is not like that because I think it would be an unnecessary privacy exposure but just wanted a confirmation for my peace of mind.

Thanks in advance!

You're right to be cautious about granting apps full access to your photo library.

However, typically, this permission doesn’t automatically mean the app can remotely access or upload your entire photo library without your further consent. Apps are generally confined to operating within the permissions you grant them on your device. They usually don’t have unrestricted access to remotely fetch or upload your photos without specific actions from you, such as selecting and uploading a photo within the app.

Apple's privacy policies and guidelines also enforce limitations on how apps handle your data. Usually, the access granted to third-party apps remains within the confines of the app's functionality and doesn’t permit unfettered remote access to your entire photo library.

Nonetheless, it's always a good practice to be mindful of the apps you grant such permissions to. Be cautious with apps from unknown or untrusted sources, as they might misuse permissions or have weaker security measures in place.

If you ever feel concerned about an app's access or behavior, you can manage app permissions in your iPhone settings. Go to Settings > Privacy > Photos to review and modify which apps have access to your photo library.

Overall, while granting access to your photo library does allow an app to interact with your media, it typically doesn't grant unrestricted remote access without further specific actions or permissions from you within the app itself.
