Making wifi calls in airplane mode

I used to be able to make WiFi calls with my phone on airplane mode. We have terrible cell coverage at our home. If I don’t put my phone on airplane mode my phone will try to use the bad cell service instead. Suddenly my phone won’t allow calls on airplane mode and I have to disable to connect. Which effectively means I am no longer able to make calls from my house.
