iPhone 15 Pro Max - pressing shutter captures image in the past

My new iPhone 15 Pro Max captures images from BEFORE I even press the shutter so I'm getting an image that happened in the past. I tried to capture a moving subject on a carousel when the child was right in front of me but the image it captured was from before the child even got to that point. Missed so many perfect shots. Can this "feature" be turned off or, if a bug, be fixed? I don't want to shoot in Live or make decisions about which burst shot to keep. I want to press the shutter and have the camera capture the shot I am currently focused on. I'm on iOS version 17.1.2. Thank you.
