SIM card size conflict while upgrading SE(2) to 12

Upgrading from iPhone Se (2nd generation) to iPhone 12. The SIM trays are different sizes. Apple support web site says both models use the Nano SIM card. What's up? My iPhone 12 did not have a SIM card in its slot.
