Does anyone know if it is possible to clone iPads with pre-made images, like computers? For example, if there are hundreds of iPads in the field, all with custom and identical configurations and apps. If a few of them have problems now and then, then the replacement ones is can be quickly cloned instead of manually configuring them and setting up the apps, etc.
+(I understand that this question carries the risk of being deemed "stupid", but want to ask it anyway.)+
This should allow you to clone your network configurations, etc., in-house apps and external apps. I've not used it, but this is the theory behind it. I'll likely be using it soon, though.

i´ve used the tool now several times. It works, but only for some basic features. It includes wirelell lan settings and password settings eg.
it does not include any backup features or registration features for new ipads.
I´ve got problems with importing the profile/settings file. i was able to export, but i couldnt reimport at another pc.
we´ve got problems with the activation/registration because you can setup only 5 ipads at once at a pc with itunes.
We did the setup in two steps, after "erase all content and settings", or out of the box, whiule the funky connector is showing on the home screen.
1) connect to iTunes, just till prompted for internet proxy credentials in iTunes
2) disconnect device prior to associating it with iTunbes computer. It's also possible to run iTunes in "Activation Only" mode. Either way device won't associate PC initially running iTunes.
3) deploy config profile from IPCU
As has been mentioned IPCU is not an enterprise class utility. It requires that a (encrypted) profile be deployed over a USB connection, but it seems to be the only things going for the time being. Hopefully we can get sometype of MDM solution, like RIM offer for Blackberry devices. The devices are dynamite, but there is not strong capability yet for central administration.
