Mac System Data Too Big

So today on December 27th, 2023 I was needing to free up space to edit a very large video product on final cut pro and when I went into my system storage Apple had recommended to me to "Store In ICloud" (DONT CLICK THIS EVER, IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT TURNED ON THEN GO INTO "ICLOUD" IN YOUR SETTINGS AND CLICK "MANAGE" AND TURN IT OFF AND CLICK OFF "OPTIMIZE MAC STORAGE). In theory this "store in icloud" setting would store my desktop and other documents on ICloud there for freeing up space but man was I mistaken. Just 3 hours later when I logged back on, more than twice the space I had before was taken up. I searched all over the web and barley had any answers besides "theres nothing to do to fix this". My system data was at 60gb before I turned on that Store On ICLOUD setting and now it was 120 gb on my 256gb Macbook pro 2020. I could not seem to find anything until I found this youtube video that really helped called "Clear System Data Storage on Your Mac" By Amir Bendabi. Amir did not solve my problem completely but he indeed helped a little so I suggest you watch that after reading this full solution that I found! FULL SOLUTION:

-Go into finder

-Press Shift+Command+G at the same time to pull up a search menu

-Then search "~/library/caches" then click enter

-I Highly suggest showing items in columns and then filtering items by size, if you do not know how to do that then google those keywords

  • Everyone has different things filling up their system data but the big 2 are Adobe and ICloud.
  • So in the caches folder find the "Cloudkit" folder and right click and click "get info" if its taking up a lot of space then delete the whole folder, Cloud kit was taking up 115gb of my system storage and "adobe" folder was taking up 50gb, choose carefully which adobe files you delete though and do research before doing so.

-IF NONE OF THAT WORKED

Then click "get info" on every folder and see which ones are taking up the most space, theres probably a better way of doing it but this is the way I used to find Cloudkit and Adobe, and which ever caches are taking up the most space delete them, but do a little research first to make sure you can delete them.

I hope that helped!

First incorrect assertion

Apple's iCloud was not and is not designed by Apple to be like an External Drive where you can Off Load large files in the hope of making empty space on the Internal Drive

It is only a Conduit to have files available in iCloud so other devices your own that use the same Apple ID and iCloud can access the same files

Cache files, be they from iCloud and or Adobe can be cleared as you have done - Yes.

But these same cache files will be recreated as the system or application needs to recreate them.

That is how it works

A friendly word of advise, to better future-proof your computer needs now and projected needs, for storage purposes.

Attempting to run " final cut pro " on " my 256gb Macbook pro 2020. " is going to require a lot of effort on your part, to maintain a reasonable amount of Empty Space on this drive.

May consider, on any future purchases to Custom Purchase a machine with at least 1 TB to 2 TB Drive or more Drive Capacity.

This may allow you to not have to jump through as may hoops as you had to presently.
