Why does the status indicator on my iPhone X sometimes show 5g?
an iPhone X cannot receive a 5g signal, so why does the status indicator on my phone sometimes show 5g?

It's not really true 5G because the phone is not capable of receiving true 5G.
Look carefully and you will usually see thing like 5Ge, 5G+ and other nonsense.
AT&T has a setting of 5Ge......which is not 5G at all.....it's a 4G signal. Other carriers are playing games as well.
