Music Library file being copied to Previous Libraries folder many, many times

My wife’s MacBook Air is suffering from an issue with the Music app. For some reason it is copying the file Music Library.musiclibrary to the subfolder “Previous Libraries”. The old copies include the date & time of the copy within square brackets in the file name. For example Music Library [2023-12-27 7.39.35].musiclibrary.

The dates & times appear somewhat random and may be related to the launch of the music app.

Any ideas about what might be causing this?

Press and hold down option as you launch Music and explicitly choose the library that you want it to open, typically ~/Music/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary. Close Music, then reopen while holding down option+cmd to open it in its safe mode. Assuming Music now opens and closes without generating new backup libraries, and has the content that you expect, you can cull most of the Previous Libraries folder. You might keep the most recent, and the earliest before they started replicating wildly.
