Safari Freezing Up on my Mac

On a regular basis, my Mac (Sonoma) will freeze up while using Safari on various websites. I usually have multiple tabs open at one on multiple screens. It happens across any website, not a particular one - CNN, Fidelity, Wall Street Journal.

I can restart my Mac and Safari will work just fine -- until it happens again.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have an AdBlocker that is preventing those sites from loading. The sporadic behavior would be caused by the particular ad that it was trying to block. Use EtreCheck and post the report here using the Additional Text option when posting to see what is loading on startup that is causing this conflict.

I have this problem too - running 14.2.1 (Sonoma) (Newish MacBook M2 chip)

It's not just websites - it happens with a PDF I open too, when scrolling halfway down the document it will freeze up on that open tab. The other tabs are fine.

Annoying as this didn't used to happen. Also happens with random websites and will be fine after force quitting. Safari will freeze so badly sometimes it won't even allow you to quit normally. The strange thing is when I bring up the force quit dialogue box it doesn't show Safari as not responding and the OS thinks it's responding normally.

I see this behavior in Safari, I do not use it as my main working browser, but I do leave it as the default.

Quite Safari and relaunch it....

this would be my first step compare to a reboot of the machine which is more disruptive(?)

—of course you can clear Safari cache (use the keyboard shortcut)

—of course you can relaunch Safari App holding the Shift key down for a fresh start...

I always advised to have more than one browser.
