what does the button on the left side of the I phone do? Us

There is a button on left side of my iPhone, above the volume buttons. It appears orange when it’s on. What does it do need it on???.

That is the Ring/Silent button. When orange is visible, it is in silent mode (silences rings from phone calls and text notifications).

Also see the following from Use the side, Home, and other buttons on your iPhone - Apple Support

  • With the Ring/Silent switch: If the switch shows orange, your iPhone is in Silent mode and will vibrate for incoming calls or alerts. When in Silent mode, the alarms you set in the Clock app will still sound, and calls from favorite contacts will still ring.
