Why won’t Shared folders on a different Mac allow themselves to be opened remotely?

I have several attached devices on a Mac mini shared. The “Sharing” box is checked for each mounted volume. And when I go to that computer using the Finder from my laptop, the device seems to be available, but when i try to open it I get an error that the share is “no longer available”. I’m not certain what else to do here.

I saw one person answer a similar question saying go to the “sharing settings” and turn SMB sharing on, and that there’s a button to do that, but I can’t find it.

Go to System Settings > General then click Sharing.

Turn on File Sharing then click the little "I" Info button next to File Sharing.

Click Options, then turn on “Share files and folders using SMB.”
