MacOS Wallpaper uses over half of my Ram

Hey There,

Since I upgraded to MacOS Sonoma about a month ago, I noticed that my Mac ran much slower than it used to. with the Beachballs becoming the norm. I looked into Activity monitor and saw that my Wallpaper (Stock MacOS Monterey Wallpaper) uses over 9GB of Ram. this is not the first time that that's happened to me. I tried killing the process and Restarting my mac. Something else I noticed is, that the Battery life went from holding over 2 days with normal usage to not even holding half a day with very light usage and being mostly on standby. Btw I'm using a 14" Macbook Pro from 2021 with the M1 Pro, 16GB of Ram, and 512GB of Storage. I have owned this mac since last Christmas.

Kind regards

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.2

slowness can be caused hundreds of different things, and I can say with authority that your causes are NOT the same as those already posted.

what version macOS? what are you running, or better yet use Etrecheck:

Download and run this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. it changes NOTHING.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the system ClipBoard, then Pasted into an Additional text window in a reply on the forums.

I'm guessing that this is anti-virus:

Those slow the device by interfering with Apple's built-in protection, and can run up RAM usage for other apps. Any anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps also mask otehr issues, making it harder for us to diagnose issues in the text-based forum.

If I add up just the processes that Google Chrome and it minions shown in your screenshot, I get 4.8GB RAM used

<<. I think the only way to fix the problem is to factory reset your Mac. >>

That will definitely fix the problem, provided you do not re-install the software that was causing the issues. But that is akin to cracking nuts with a B-52 bomber.

Some users may prefer careful analysis instead, and an Etrecheck report is the first step toward determining the cause(s) of the slowness.
