Apple Music Media Files Cannot Be Located Automatically After Moving Library Between Macs

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I recently upgraded from a MacBook Pro early 2015 to a MacBook Pro 14 inch M3 Pro (2023). When copying my music (I have always used the Music app, even when it used to be iTunes) I moved my music library over using an external hard drive, and moved the actual library file by airdrop between the Macs. I opened my library file in the new Mac, and then located one song manually for it to prompt me to locate the other songs. It did, and was able to locate around 70% of my tracks. The other 30% are more problematic.

I manually located a bunch but Music is unable to automatically locate them (I have almost 5,000 tracks in total and would not be able to grab the 1,000 ish that need locating manually). I set the file path for Music to find the tracks to the same as it was on the old Mac (/Macintosh HD/Users/<user>/Music/Music/Music). However, when I checked the location of a bunch of the unlocate-able files (using the Get Info function), it showed a strange file path: (file:///Users/<user>/Music/Music/Music/<artist>/<album>/<track>.mp3) I keep my music files organized by artist and album. The three slashes after 'file' in that sequence look weird, but I am no coder. I turned on and off the 'Keep Music Media Organized' switch to no avail. What can I do in this situation? I have been stumped and any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.6

The "missing file" issue with exclamation marks happens if the file is no longer where iTunes or Music expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, the drive it lives on has had a name change, or you've moved a non-portable library to a different path (see Make a split library portable for details). It is also possible that iTunes or Music have changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place, (see the iTunes Media Organization section of Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community for details) or that you've been too aggressive when deleting duplicates at some point.

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Cmd-I to get Song Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the file tab for the location the library thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drives. Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive label has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case. If everything is where it is supposed to be try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Mac - Apple Community.

In some cases the library may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info, or when playing a track, but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Although it says something like "use the same location" I think it expects to find the tracks in the same artist & album layout they were in previously, with one systematic change to the path.

If you want me to try to provide specific advice please post back the following details:

  1. The location of the media folder under iTunes|Music > Preferences > Advanced
  2. The location of a sample missing track shown under Song Info > File > Location that begins file://
  3. The true path to the file whose details you gave in 2

Hello and thanks in advance for your help, I have moved my library from a NAS (DROBO) to my internal drive on iMac. I have also recently migrated from my old iMac to a new one, but everything was migrated elegantly.

I did not solve my problem earlier because I did not listen to music on my iMac in a long time:

  1. The location of the media folder: /Macintosh HD/Users/jean-marc/Music
  2. The location of a sample missing track shown under Song Info > File > Location: file:///Volumes/Drobo 5D/MISC/__________MP3s/Music/alt-J/An Awesome Wave/04 Breezeblocks 3.m4a
  3. The true path to the file whose details you gave in 2: /Macintosh HD/Users/jean-marc/Music/[and then either the name of a band folder or an album then /songname]

Thank You
