contact phone numbers have XSHAREDPHOTODISPLAYPREFALWAYSASK added to them

A lot of the contact details for the contacts now have this text appended to the end XSHAREDPHOTODISPLAYPREFALWAYSASK.

Fo example, someone whose phone number is (555) 123456 is now listed with a phone number of (555) 123456XSHAREDPHOTODISPLAYPREFALWAYSASK.

I can’t find any reference to this anywhere on the web.

The contacts appear like this on my iPhone 14 Pro Max with 17.2.1 and on my MacBook Air with Sonoma 14.2.1.

Does anyone know what might have caused this and how I can remove the added text (without manually editing all 1000+ contacts)?

Thanks

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 17

I’m having the same problem, seems like some sort of virus. Going through 1500 contacts and manually deleting the text from each entry is incredibly frustrating. Anyone have any idea what causes this?

I only noticed it starting the other day when I updated to iOS 17.2.1

To improve understanding of the phenomenon, it would be highly beneficial if you could share a screenshot. Visual representations carry greater impact than written descriptions.

Please remember that this is a public forum, so when attaching a screenshot, please avoid including any personal credentials such as IP addresses, card details, email IDs, Apple IDs, IMEI numbers, serial numbers, phone numbers, order IDs, or any identifiable location information if you are sharing a map.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Hi there. The only thing I could do was to manually edit all the contacts to remove the appended text. So far it hasn't come back, so I am hoping it was a one-time thing caused by some system, but I would love to know what caused it.

It didn't impact all my contacts, but there didn't seem to be anything consistent about which ones were impacted. Some were Apple users and others were non-Apple users. Any impacted contact only had the text appended to one item of data, but that was not always the phone number. Sometimes it was appended to addresses or email addresses.

Do you know what caused your issue?

Hi, I wasn’t able to determine the cause either. Only faint hint from a web search was the settings in Messages for sharing photos, which in my case was turned off but I have now set to “Contacts only”. I had a vCard backup from last week so was able to import most of the contacts which just left a few recent ones to edit. The rogue text was added to the last item within each contact: telephone number, email, or within the Notes section when this had been used. Hopefully it doesn’t reoccur, but will do regular vCard exports in the meantime!
