Editing problems with new Journal app

When I try to edit my journal entry, frequently my cursor jumps to the end of the last paragraph. I don't know if this is a flaw in the programming but I thought I would ask. Also there's no way to send a journal entry to someone else. If you copy and paste it into an email, it loses all its formatting. The only thing I managed to do was paste it into a word document and it was just so many steps to do this. Any ideas?

Hello Apple, I live almost everything you do but the journal app is killing me. I almost love it, try to love it, try to write in it but the cursor jump thing is driving me crazy. Please fix this!!!!!!!!

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Product Feedback - Apple

Meanwhile, if the app is causing you so much anxiety, stop using it. There are hundreds of more mature journal apps in the App Store, including my favorite, Day One. Or, just use Notes.

It is absolutely awful and very frustrating when trying to type in journal and it keeps jumping the cursor every where especially the end. I copy and paste from other web sites as part of my journal and you can barely get your cursor to stay somewhere to paste. I am very close to abandoning it and never go back to Apple journal. Fix it please!

As Journal is part of iOS, I'd just leave the feedback in the iPhone section.

Meanwhile, I highly recommend Day One. It will even use Apple's journaling prompts.

My understanding was that the iOS 17 beta testing was the place for this to have occurred.

Beta testing primarily looks for bugs. Once the app is released to everyone, Apple can start collecting data on how people who aren't beta testers actually use or don't use the app. Apple collects anonymized usage data directly from the phone (unless the user opted out)

It is quite unlike Apple to release something that is functionally sparse and buggy.

I don't agree that it's buggy. But, yes, it's spare. And, historically, Apple's built in apps have been spare. Think back to the original Reminders or Calendar, especially as compared to other third-party apps available at the time. And there's some good financial reasons for this. Apple doesn't need to spend a lot of money and resource on development if they leave things open to third-party developers And, Apple makes money off of apps sold for money in the App Store.

For many year I have been, albeit awkwardly, shoehorning the functionality of the Notes app into a journaling function. The problem with using Notes for that is that it also becomes cluttered up with all the other stuff I that needs to go in it. Stuff that you would more commonly see the Notes app used for. So I was really pleased to see the introduction of the Journal app with iOS 17. Something to be used specifically for journaling.

I don't understand why you'd use Notes, which I agree is not the best option, when there are so many great options available. I've been using Day One for over a decade. It's awesome.

It is also my understanding that Apple has visibility of these fora and takes feedback from them to feed into their dev cycle. Perhaps this in not that the case? Do you know one way or the other?

No, that is not the case. The only Apple employees who regularly read here are the Hosts and their job is to make sure people adhere to the rules. On rare occasions, if there is some sort of issue, a development team may review the forums for examples of the problem and even reach out to users for me informations. But, suggestions and feedback should go through the feedback page.

I assume that the link you embedded at the end of your reply is your suggestion as to where these issues should also be reported?

Not "also". It's the only place the suggestions will get seen and recorded.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

The cursor jumps for me too, as well as cutting off my entry mid-writing and will not let me see the text that is written after the cutoff point. It’s as if I ran out of character space?? But it shows up in the reader version when I want to review it. Used for 2 days and I guess I’ll go back to my old fashion journal bc I can’t stand Notes for my journalling either, it’s too fussy for me.

Let us know when you fix the bugs.

This is happening for me as well. It’s dissapointing as I expect applications made by Apple to be the gold standard in performance and quality. Unfortunately the Journal app lacks in both departments. As outlined above, the cursor keeps jumping to the end. Secondly, when writing longer form content in the journal editor I am experiencing some pretty bad performance, text entry lags and the interface becomes slow to respond. Given the fact that I’m using a brand new iPhone 15 Pro which is only 2 months old I can only assume this is flaw in the journal app.

Please fix this app. I love the concept of it and I can, for the time being, accept that it doesn’t have an equivalent app on iPad or MacOS. However at the very least I expect it to function seamlessly on iPhone.

I too am experiencing these random cursor jumps. This makes editing an entry a real pita sometimes.

I also second the suggestion made by DG_23_.

I would suggest that, as a minimum, the same formatting options as the Notes app are a requirement for journaling.

On top of those functions, I would also especially like to have the ability to insert, no, not insert, actually to be able to “place”, and, if required, adjust the size on the page of, media like photos, videos and voice recordings.

This would far more closely reflect what I consider to be ‘normal’ journal keeping. Otherwise the Journal app really isn’t much different to the Notes app with a calendar (apart from less functionality than Notes).
