How to click and drag in a document on MacBook Pro air using Big Sur

I have tried all the suggestions on Safari how to do control c and control v, (ie, copy and paste in another document) on the MacBook Pro and Big Sur and nothing works.

You first select (highlight) the text. Then you copy - move to your spot in the other document and paste.
