I bought a used iPad and its locked the owner died what can I do? Throw it out?

I bought a used Ipad and was going to use it for parts to repair my Ipad but instead gave up on repairing my older model ipad and decided it would be better to use this newer model iPad instead and didn't know about it being locked. Well the original owner died and its locked. what are my options? Throw it out? Surely there must be some way to use this darn Ipad. Its not stolen but unless the original owner comes back to life I have no way of knowing the original passcode or Apple ID? HELP!!!! Surely I can't be the first guy to run into this kind of problem?

If you know the seller's family, you could give the iPad to them, and ask them for help in removing Activation Lock and properly erasing the iPad before transferring it back to you. Unless they already know the deceased person's Apple ID and Apple ID password, they will need help from Apple – help which is not guaranteed. They may want to read these Support articles:

If you can't unlock the iPad, you can recycle it. See the recycling section of:

I'm pretty sure that Apple won't give you any trade-in credit for an Activation-Locked iPad.
