problem entering symbols on iPhone without shift

Some of my passwords contain symbols. When entering them on my Macbook, I use the shift key. There is no shift key on my iPhone, so when I enter them, I just click the symbol on the iPhone keyboard. For some reason, the websites I am on don't seem to recognize the password. I have tried re-entering the password several times, so I don't believe it is an entry error. What's the problem? Is the symbol when entered using its own button different than when entering it using the shift on a Macbook keyboard? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your reply. I would think you're right. However, when I go to a website and enter the password using a symbol (e.g., an exclamation point, which is the number 1 key using the shift), the password works, but when I enter the password using the ! key on the iPhone, the website rejects the password. Because I am entering the password in its entirety, I don't know why the website is rejecting it, but the only reason I could think of is the symbols being entered, because I know for sure that the letters are correct.
