Sounds like you were able to erase the phone but now you can’t set it back up because the phone is activation locked and needs the Apple ID password which you forgot. I totally agree that Apple really needs to fix their antiquated recovery system. It’s ridiculous to have to wait so long to recover your password. I have to tell you some more bad news. That 24 hour wait time is just so their algorithm computers can decide when you can reset your password. In 24 hours, then it will give you your true wait time. Keep going to iforgot.apple.com for updates during this process. Do you by any chance have any other devices that she may have been logged into that could maybe be used to reset her password. Sorry you have to go through this when Apple engineers could make it easier.

Oh great… that terrible news. Unfortunately her phone is only linked

to her phone and her number . Lesson learned that we definitely need two factor authentication on her phone. Thanks for the response though. I appreciate any help

. I don’t know why Apple has

to make this so difficult. I mean I get why if people lose their phone but still.

This is so frustrating

I disagree with you. The activation lock is an anti theft feature. Personally, it is not something I would want Apple to "fix." Plus, you need to keep in mind that you are posting to a community forum where Apple Users volunteer to help with technical questions. We cannot control why Apple does what it does. We can only suggest how to use the tools offered by Apple.
