Why is ApplePay suddenly declining cards, saying that an expiration date of 2025 is "in the past"?

Tried to renew a subscription this morning, but Apple declined my card as “out of date” with an error message that the expiration date must be between 2024 and 2044. The date on the card is 2025. Is this just my phone or an Apple-wide issue, and how ca it be fixed?
