How can I get rid of the annoying yellow circle/arrow in notes, which constantly pops up and disturbs workflow?

How do you stop notes from popping up in new windows? In the Notes app, every time I click on a note in the sidebar, it opens in the main window, but a new popup window appears with that same note and formatting controls only. It's very annoying and has no reason to exist. Any way to stop this from happening?
