opening .jpg.hqx files

hi there, i am trying to open a .HQX file but i keep being prompted that the file is corrupted even though i can unzip the file and an image comes out of the other end. that image is the file i have been trying to view but it keeps saying Preview cannot open the file or the file is corrupted. i have tried converting the jpg file into other file formats but still get the same result does anyone know how resolve this?

i have used the built in Archive Utility along with 2 third party file conversion apps but they all lead me to the same result saying file is corrupted. i originally got the file from an email 16 years ago and it was sent to me from an old Mac. i hope this infomation helps.

A file type ending in .hqx was encoded with BinHex 4. It dates back to original Macintosh "Classic" OS. Preceding versions of BinHex predate even the original Macintosh, maybe the original Apple II. It is that old.

There are a number of utilities that claim the ability to decode BinHex 4 encoded file types, but I hesitate to recommend anything you can probably research on your own anyway.

Select the file then secondary-click (right-click, control-click etc) then choose Open With > TextEdit assuming TextEdit appears as an option. Assuming TextEdit can open the file and it is readable, the first line will indicate

(This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0)

... or something like it. The rest of the file will be gibberish ASCII text. That will confirm it's BinHex encoded, after which you can go about researching an appropriate decoder.

If that readable text does not appear in the first line of that file perhaps it really is corrupted.
