How to avoid the silicone case to get stickiness and how to remove the stickiness and prevent it from happening?

I've been using my trusty old iPhone 7 Plus along with its original silicone case since the day it was launched. Recently, I've noticed that the sides of the silicone case have become sticky and feel unpleasant to the touch. It's worth mentioning that I have consistently cleaned the case with distilled water as part of my regular weekly maintenance routine to keep everything neat and tidy.

Now that I've upgraded to the iPhone 14 Pro and have obtained the original Apple Silicone case, I'd like to know how I can prevent the stickiness issue I encountered with my previous case. Additionally, I'm interested in understanding what causes this stickiness and how I can avoid it from affecting the new case. What cleaning methods and products can I use to both remove the stickiness and prevent it from recurring in the future?

If the case was as old as the iPhone (since you say you’ve had it since it was launched) you honestly got well more than your moneys worth out of it if this didn’t occur until recently. Silicone can become sticky over time because of oil, dirt, etc buildup. Also, the material starts to degrade over time. So eventually it will happen.
