Magic trackpad gestures overridden when connecting external display to Macbook pro M1

I have this Macbook Pro M1 running Sonoma provided by my employer. There is this weird behaviour that I have never seen before.

I have configured my magic trackpad to use 3 fingers to swipe to change desktop/space and to show mission control and app expose.

It works fine as long as I am on the laptop. As soon as I connect an external display via USB-C, the 3 fingers commands are overridden and I have to use 4 fingers for swiping, missions control and app expose.

The 3 fingers swipe now makes the cursor jump to the next screen.

Can someone explain what is happening?

I have a Macbook Air M2 for which this does not happen so I am assuming it must be a software that is added by my employer causing it but they are just security apps. I don't see how they would cause a change in behaviour of the trackpad.

Speak to the IT Department or the MDM Service that the Company has enrolled this computer with

They have control over what this computer can be used for and how it is allowed to function

They could also have control over how new external devices " my magic trackpad " are permitted to function.

I’m not at a Mac to check (and I don’t have an external display to fully investigate), but I know there are certain gestures that can only be set for three or four finger swipes. Perhaps one of those is related to multiple displays and switches the gestures to make what you have set work when you connect an external monitor.

Compare what is set in the Trackpad settings when you have the display connected and when not.
