'Applications' exceeding the maximum storage space of MacBook Pro

Hello, I'm trying to clear space on my MacBook Pro M1 Max (running Ventura Version 13.5.2) but my 'applications' are exceeding the maximum storage available on my machine. I have attempted to rebuild the spotlight index (as shown here: Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support) but this hasn't worked. My laptop still allows me to download small files but anything over 10gb tells me the storage is full. I am a video editor so have been working from external drives for over a month now hoping this would fix itself. Is anyone please able to provide any potential solutions?

Thank you,

Quentin

"1.33TB out of 994.66" combined with "My laptop still allows me to download small files..." suggests to me a reporting error.

However, assuming it is NOT a reporting error, first BACK UP everything NOW

Now highlight your boot drive icon and do "Get Info." Are the numbers different?

Next, try a restart and then check for capacity reports.

Then try starting in Safe Mode (Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) carefully noting that the procedure is different for newer Apple Silicon Macs than fo older Intel Macs. Safe mode can roughly be compared to rebuilding the Spotlight index but works on the entire disk. Let the computer sit in Safe Mode for about 30 minutes to give it time to sort out any issues. Then restart normally and check capacity

Report back on whether that helps and we can offer more suggestions.
