Why NOT? Is it some contractual thing between Apple & the TV manufacturers?
Is there a work-around so that it IS possible? I'd like to be able to listen to directors' commentaries, etc. while watching a movie on a large screen. Thank you.

You can watch iTunes Extras in the Apple TV app on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV box. Or in iTunes for Windows on a PC.
If you can't view your iTunes Extras - Apple Support
For watching on a TV screen, that would best fit the Apple TV box.
