Mail rules sending emails to archive on Gmail account, not to the folder I want them to go to

I've started making some new rules on the mail app today to help break up my inbox and make things manageable. For some reason, whilst I am in the folder I am adding a rule for (if email is from "xyz", send to folder "abc") when I hit apply, the ones i had already moved there manually that applied to the rule disappeared.

It took a few moments to find the emails were archived, so luckily I hadn't lost them, but why is this happening?

I tested this in another folder and the same thing happened. It removed the relevant emails from the folder I wanted to have them sent to and from the inbox and archived them. The rule clearly has the right information and without any mention of archive whatsoever.

Example rule:

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.0

Well, based on what I've researched from other threads it seems like the problem is with Google's labeling system. When you try to move an email to a folder through Apple Mail it essentially just archives it instead.

I've found a workaround, but probably won't be super effective for everyone, but it's at least better then nothing.

To still be able to use Apple's filter system I created a brand new email that works with Apple's folder system and moved the message to that email instead.

So the process I did was:

  1. Create new email NON-google account. In this case I made a yahoo email account.
  2. Created the folder on Apple mail under the yahoo account
  3. Setup rule moving emails to folder created under yahoo account (which originally was received in gmail account)

Voila, now I have a working filter.

I needed this to sort all the newsletters I keep an eye on, but if you also use it for correspondence purposes you just need to make sure when you reply to the email you update the from section to your original gmail account.
