I have an internet mail account that for some reason is now asking for my password. I evidently must have changed it from what I have in my notes and can only see dots when looking up my account. No idea why the password is no longer there but until I can unlock the dots I'm stuck.

The password will be shown as ••••• in password fields unless the app developer chose to implement an option to reveal them. The Mail app does not do that. Use Keychain Access.
The most expedient solution will be to remove that email account, and add it again. To learn how to do that, please refer to If you can't send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support. Scroll to the bottom where it describes the steps to Remove your email account, then add it back.
