HELP! Disc Storage GONE Because of App I Downloaded Called "iMobie Phone Rescuer"

I really need your help.

I downloaded and paid for this program https://www.imobie.com/phonerescue/ios-data-recovery.htm

I was trying to recover deleted text messages.

Well - I downloaded it, USB'd my iPhone to Macbook...and started the recovery process which meant it was downloading my texts. I noticed that my computer started running slow. Checked the storage and this download took 200 GB of storage (and didn't even finish). So, I stopped it. Deleted the application. Asked for a refund.

The problem?

The storage is still taken up. See attachments. Here's what happens...

  • when I go to "Storage" it will show 200GB taken up in "System Data"...
  • after a few seconds, it "updates" and it shows the 200GB+ in "Applications"
  • problem is.....when you look at applications, there's nothing there even close to that (or all of them combined)
  • I talked to Apple Support and they were stumped. The developer is non-responsive and the reviews online are terrible.

Any ideas on how I could find this massive data dump that I guess is sitting on my computer somewhere?

Desperate for help, thank you all so much.

And the Library folder it is referencing is hidden by default in macOS in your home user folder. In the Finder, click Option-click on the "Go" menu and you will see the Library for the home user folder appear. If you click the Finder's "Go" menu and toggle the Option key you will see "Library" appear & disappear.

Now if you also backup up your Mac like you should be doing, then even when you delete these items they may still take up storage space if the backup software has made a backup snapshot. At some point the backup snapshot will be automatically deleted once the backup has been successfully transferred to external media. You can view & delete APFS snapshots using the information in this Apple article:

FYI, if you wanted to use this app again, just point the backup path to an external drive which has sufficient storage to hold everything on your iPhone.

Deleting files from an SSD is not instantaneous. The drive will have to run its garbage collection routine to reset the storage to be writeable, again. That process goes very slow if there isn't any room left on the drive.

Even if you delete the app, the downloads it "created" will still be on the computer. Apps don't normally store data inside the app bundle.

If that doesn't work, i recommend CleanmyMac, it cleans all files sourced to an application pretty smoothly.

Completely agree with @IdrisSeabright not to use CleanMyMac or any other cleaning or optimizer apps as they are not needed on a Mac and usually causes more problems than they solve because they interfere with the normal operation of macOS. This forum is full of posts where CMM has been implicated in causing all sorts of issues....as soon as the user uninstalls CMM, their problems usually disappear. There are much better & safer ways to fix macOS issues.

Anyone installing & using CMM and similar apps will eventually be asking for help on this forum about some odd crashes or performance issues.

Everyone should read the following article written by a respected forum contributor on how to keep you computer & other devices running smoothly while keep them & yourself safe:

Barney and the other part to this is...I haven't deleted the files. I deleted the APP that was downloading all the files onto my computer.

But I spent an hour with an Apple rep today and we can't FIND the files (the ones taking up 200G+) to delete....

I went to Finder, did Command + F, did "files created within 1 day" and I can see a bunch there that I THINK are it...but I can't even delete them. Won't let me.

Barney,

So last night, after the app didn't work. I deleted the app.

But when I had downloaded it, I didn't set any path, it would have been default settings.

So, I just downloaded the app again to see what those settings would be. Here is what I see

The problem is, if I go to those locations...there's nothing there like this. Look:

I don't have a "Documents" OR a "Library" subfolder under my user "samhill" folder.

What next?!
