See iPhone models compatible with iOS 17 - Apple Support. As I understand it Apple drops support for older devices that they consider are not up to the task of running the latest version of iOS reasonably quickly. Developers tend to exploit new features in the OS to improve the quality and speed of their item, at the expense of losing compatibility with older devices. From the look of things Apple tends to support devices for between 5 and 7 years.
