Notes app on Mac is slow and sluggish and lags when typing. Any known fixes?

I'm experiencing this issue on a MacBook Air M2, 2023 running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1. Notes runs smoothly and quickly on my iPad and iOS, just not on my MacBook.

I've tried unsyncing and resyncing Notes with iCloud in settings on MacOS. I've restarted. Nothing so far has worked. The only time the issue resolved was when I unsynced with iCloud and tried a Note just On my Mac.

Is there a known fix for this? Is this a known issue? Please help. I'm a fairly advanced user of Apple products for many, many years and this one has me stumped. I love the Notes app but can't continue to use it with this issue. Argh.

Quit Notes on the Mac—

if you are using iCloud sync—sign out of Apple ID and back in again

Sign in or out of your Apple ID on Mac

Then hold the Shift key down and relaunch Notes.app an compare your results.

You slowness is because it trying to send data to iCloud! turn of iCloud sync for notes and see if it fixes it!
