Do I have face recognition on my iPad air?

I have a new iPad Air - latest version. Can I use facial recognition to unlock it and how?

I just bought the latest iPad Air today, and I need facial recognition, so I can read and play music scores with it using Forscore Pro app! iPad Air does not feature FaceID or facial recognition.

The only iPad models that have FaceID are iPad Pro - as these are the only iPad models that incorporate the front TrueDepth camera sensor-array:

  • iPad Pro 11" (all models)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (third generation or later)
  • iPad Pro M4

If you want or need FaceID, you have no alternative than to return your iPad Air and purchase a recent model iPad Pro.

If you purchased your iPad Air directly from Apple, in most countries/regions you have 14-days within which to return your device for exchange or refund. If instead you purchased from another retailer, you will need to investigate their returns policy.

But I want Face ID

All models of iPad in recent years support either TouchID or FaceID - but not both.

All iPad models that support TouchID have a physical Home Button at bottom centre of the screen - within which is the TouchID sensor - or for iPad Air4 and mini6, incorporate the TouchID sensor within the Top (Sleep/Wake) button.

iPad models supporting FaceID, such as your iPad Pro, have a FaceID sensor (consisting of an Infrared Dot Projector and TrueDepth Camera array) - this sensor being absent from iPad models that support TouchID.

If your want or need FaceID, you have no alternative than to purchase a recent model iPad Pro.

LotusPilot has already replied, indicating that your iPad Air does not have Face ID or facial recognition.

I would add another caution: Even if you return your iPad Air, and buy an iPad that supports Face ID, there is no guarantee that you will be able to use facial gestures to turn pages in a music app while you are conducting, or singing, or playing some instrument.

I would suggest checking with the app vendors to see IF their app can do all the things that you want on an iPad that has Face ID hardware – and not blindly assuming that "if I can unlock the iPad when it has a clear view of my face, that means I can use facial recognition to do all sorts of other things."
