No more support for Brother DCP-7065DN printer post Sonoma?

While tackling some other issues with my 2021 14' MBP I decided to manually factory reset the laptop (Time machine had been porting over old software that was causing compatibility issues with some hardware).

While doing so, I decided to upgrade the OS to Sonoma (as there was a green light on what I thought was all my hardware and software).

Turns out I missed one: my Brother 7065-DN multi-function laser printer and copier.

I know it is old, especially by tech standards. But it just worked prior to this.

The printer is connected via network and still works fine when using Brother's iPrint&Scan app from my iPhone (the same app for Mac only allows one to scan and not print though). But I can no longer print directly from my Mac. My partner can still print from her laptop (running Ventura).

After contacting Brother's support, I was told that they would no longer be keeping the drivers up to date for this machine after Sonoma.

I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do (short of rolling back the OS, which I'd prefer not to do) to maintain compatibility with this printer. Is there some way to manually bring over those drivers from Ventura to Sonoma?

I'd rather not throw the printer and the extra unused toner out (that's not very environmentally friendly) while the printer still works.

Couldn't edit my post. :( I have egg on my face. I got a hint from https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/any-try-old-unsupported-brother-printer-scanners-with-m1-yet.2277825/#post-29451051. To my amazement, installing the MacOS 10.15.x drivers from https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=dcp7065dn_all&os=10060 on both my Apple Silicon Macs (M1 Mac Mini (on OS 14.5) and M1 Pro MacBook Pro (on OS 14.4.1) worked! Was able to add the DCP-7065DN as a CUPS printer and printing worked!

Good information! Earlier, there have been similar reports about some other Brother laser printers. As a general advice, if nothing else is compatible/supported under a later macOS version, it may at least be worth checking whether a macOS 10.15 Catalina printer driver (such as the 1.5.0) would work whenever available for a certain model.

As always, one should make sure that backup copies have been made of all important files before testing anything.

Based on the search results, it appears that the Brother DCP-7065DN printer may not receive support after the Sonoma update. Brother themselves have stated that the printer is no longer supported under Sonoma [[1]](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255390911). Users have reported issues with printing and have been advised to reinstall the printer or use the AirPrint feature if available [[2]](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255199010). It is recommended to contact Brother directly to inquire about a Sonoma compliant printer driver for the DCP-7065DN and to seek further assistance with any potential issues during the transition [[2]](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255199010).

#### Steps to address potential issues during the transition:

1. Contact Brother: Reach out to Brother directly to inquire about a Sonoma compliant printer driver for the DCP-7065DN and to seek assistance with any potential issues during the transition.

2. Reinstall the printer: If you encounter printing issues after the Sonoma update, try reinstalling the printer. This may help resolve any compatibility issues.

3. Use AirPrint feature: If your printer has the AirPrint feature, consider deleting the driver and setting up AirPrint as an alternative printing method.

4. Seek technical support: If you continue to experience issues, it is recommended to seek technical support from Brother or consult their FAQs and troubleshooting resources.

Please note that the information provided is based on the available search results, and it is always best to contact the manufacturer directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding product support and compatibility.

Unfortunately it seems this printer uses a proprietary format for the job data so the only free software driver available for it is the "brlaser" driver which must be compiled from source code since there are no binary pre-packaged macOS versions. I doubt compiling would be easy on macOS as it may require dependencies that are not installed by default which would likely just clutter your system & possibly cause problems.

I think it may be time to replace this printer with a newer model which supports AirPrint.

As for the scanning portion, you may want to check whether the VueScan driver is compatible with this Brother multi-function device. Have you already tried to see whether the built in macOS app Image Capture is able to scan from this Brother multifunction device?

I guess you could save/print as PDF, then transfer those PDFs to a computer which can print to the Brother printer, not quite as nice or handy. I wonder if you drop them into a special folder on that Mac whether you could have it print those files automatically using some sort of script or folder action.

I'm guessing you're using an Intel Mac. No joy for me for AirPrint on from my iOS 17 iPhone SE 3 nor my M1 Pro MacBook Pro on MacOS 14.4.1. If you try adding the printer via Settings on an Apple Silicon Mac, it'll see the printer and it'll say Kind Bonjour. But, it will say "Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software."

In the past, when I needed to print from a Mac at home w/this DCP-7065DN, I've had to fallback to an Intel Mac.

Hi BatteryBill,

Thanks for chiming in. Did you do anything special to get your DCP 7065 working on Sonoma? Just the regular installation procedure?

Brother themselves say that the printer is no longer supported under Sonoma, but if there’s a way I can get away with not buying a new printer, I will. Since posting this, I have just been air dropping files to my phone (from where I can print over the network without issue). It’s annoying, but better than nothing. I’d love to be able to skip that extra step.
