Apple Numbers not formatting cells correctly

I am doing my timesheets and adding all of my hours for the year. But some cells will not calculate the sum of the time into a number format with actual decimals instead of adding a duration. What do I have to do to override this problem in those cells?

To calculate a sum, all of your values need to be decimal Number or they all need to be Duration.

If you are getting Duration where you need a decimal Number (for example, you have subtracted one date-time from another) then you can use one of the DUR2 functions to convert from Duration to Number.

If you are getting a decimal Numbers where you need Duration then you can use the DURATION function to convert.

I've figured out what the problem was. I needed to change the "Sum" formula to "SumProduct" in order to calculate the daily hour/minute totals into a result that showed up as a number translating the hours/minutes to decimal format.

The cell wouldn't allow me to change the result from Duration to Number because of the formula's "laws" based upon the "Sum" criteria. It took me hours to figure out and some conversations with Apple's support, but we got it now!

I am making the jump from Excel to Numbers (and Word to Pages) and the learning curve is just a bit tedious, but the result is fantastic. Being able to access all of my docs on any of my Apple Devices is extremely convenient and time saving for me!

Thanks for the feedback!

ebc,

It's usually helpful if you tell us more about your calculations, and even better if you can include some screen shots.

In general, I can say that when such things happen to me it's usually because somehow the format got changed in some cells. It can help to re-establish the format, the shotgun approach, or tediously visit all the suspect cells and confirm the formatting. This assumes that your calculations are proper, so seeing what you have there would be good for the helpers here.
