I can't access Photos on my computer: "Photos is locked. This application cannot be launched. Please contact Customer Support"

I access my photos on my desktop computer. On 5 Jan 2023, i tried logging in and I got this message

"PHOTOS IS LOCKED. THIS APPLICATION CANNOT BE LAUNCHED. PLEASE CONTACT CUSTOMER SUPPORT."

This is the second time in 2 months that I have had problems accessing iCloud on my desktop Windows PC via icloud.com. And I am a subscriber to the 2TB plan.

Anyone else facing the same issue?

I want to say they did some kind of change on the backend. Based off when this thread was created, and when the following article was edited, it makes me think they might've changed some thing earlier on January 5 or possibly January 4. I spoke with support and they are still investigating. They have not said if it's a known issue, but she said she is escalating it.

Something else they kept asking was, if I had a large amount of files specifically video files. I had two of the technicians asked me that. As far as I know, I don't have video files and iCloud Drive only in the Photos app, but it was working a few weeks ago and has been fine for a while now. You can try turning off, advanced data protection if you don't care about into end encryption, but I would prefer to keep advanced data protection on. Until they get it resolved. It has to be a bug of something they changed on the back end. Because everything was working fine with advanced data protection for months now.

Hopefully they resolve it soon.

It says at the bottom of this article was last updated January 5. Manage web access to your iCloud data - Apple Support

This is sprouting up in many threads in Apple forums. Here is what I posted in one thread:

I've been storming LinkedIn and forums about Apple having this great product in ADP but no support for it.

I posted this:

Well, Apple fans (more so Advanced Data Protection users), Apple has done it again. ADP is, once again, broken.

There is NO consolation in the fact that the message shown to ADP users is different. Using an ADP protected app on iCloud now shows <App_Name? locked. For example, after trying to access NOTES and giving it permission with your iPhone, it shows:

Notes is locked

This application cannot be launched. Please contact customer support.

OK

OK? It isn't OK.

Forums are now buzzing with this issue:

<and I give reference to this forum>

and, once again, support is non-existent.

Apple has this great secure option called Advanced Data Protection but:

1. No one in Apple can seem to support it.

2. Apple seems to be in denial every time ADP is broken.

So, APPLE, please hear this.

Either DO NOT make Advanced Data Protection an option or FULLY SUPPORT it and have complete transparency when if and when it breaks.

Apple has always been known for stellar support on any and all it's products.

It seems that Apple has an Achilles Heel and it is defined by three letters:

ADP."

It's probably going to take Apple at least 2 weeks to quietly fix this until it breaks again.

DO NOT BE LURED into having any support person work on your device because it is NOT your device that is broken. It is the ADP back end.

I imagine that the issue is indeed with ADP. Online checks show that ADP may have caused issues with iCloud in the past. In December 2023, I could not access my photos on iCloud from the desktop. iCloud would send my iPhone a notification to grant permission to allow access, and when I did, there would be no movement in the iCloud website until the request timed out. I ran searches online (even here on apple support) and found that This had happened before. it was also before an iOS update. I suspect this is what is happening now. And we can only wait till Apple settles the backend and release the incoming update 17.3.

rather annoying.

I believe it's due to advanced data protection, a new feature we weren't accustomed to dealing with before! I disabled it, waited, if you try login immediately after disabled it, I don’t think it will work! This is why I got the messages of errors asking to get support! There’s no errors just wait for it and it's working, for me everything is okay now :)

Rest assured you are not the only one. If you choose to leave ADP on, you can only wait until 17.3 releases and things start working normally again. If you really need access, then you can turn off ADP.

also, I tried Apple Support before and found it was a total time waste. Not only did they not address my query but they did not understand my issue. So I Don’t recommend them. Good luck!
